Jabez was one of ten children born to Henry a general labourer and Sarah Clifford née Hopewell . By 1911, when they lived at 16 Harriett Street Stapleford, seven remained at home with their widowed father. They were William (21), Jabez (19), Moses (14), Fred (12), Lizzie (10), Rose (8) and Leslie (4).
Jabez was called up for service on 23rd March 1916. He enlisted at Ilkeston giving his age as 24 years and 4 months his occupation as that of furnace man. He originally served with the Lincolnshire Regiment with service number 39169. On 5th February 1917 he embarked on for France to join the British Expeditionary Force. He arrived at Etaples Camp on 6th February 1917. However on 6th February he was posted to the 16th battalion, Royal Scots Regiment. It was while serving in this battalion and as a result of active service on 23rd October 1917 he was seriously wounded by a gun shot wound which affected his hand, face and eye and was transferred to No 2 General Hospital.He is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery.
