Percy Sydney Speechley was born in 1890 at Grantham and was the son of John Charles a basket maker and Annie Speechley née Bark. His father John Charles was born in 1865 in Grantham and his mother Annie Elizabeth Bark was born in 1886 also in Grantham, they were married in 1886 in Grantham and went on to have the following children, Rose b1886, John b1888, Percy b1890, Florence b1891, Agnes b1894, Charles b1896, Charlotte b1900 and Alice b1901. Percy married his wife Eliza Cartwright on 11th July 1909 at the parish Church at Greasley, they went on to have 2 sons John Charles born 20th September 1910 and Percy Sydney born 15th April 1913 (died 1915) In the 1911 census, Percy is living with his wife and son at his in laws address of Raglan Street, Hill Top, Eastwood and is shown as Thomas Cartwright 63 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Annie 55 yrs , Percy is 20 yrs of age a coal miner and is is with his wife Eliza 21 yrs and their son Charles 6 months. Following his death his widow Eliza went on to receive a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week for herself and one child commencing on 11th June 1917.
Private Percy Sydney Speechley enlisted at Eastwood on 22nd August 1914 , he gave his age as 23 yrs and 161 days and gave his occupation as a coal miner/loader. He stated he have previous military service having served with the Lincolnshire Regiment, Special Reserve from which he was discharged in 1st May 1913. He was posted t the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and landed in France on 11th November 1914. He was killed in action on 15th September 1916 and is buried at Guillemont Road Cemetery, Guillemont, Somme, France .
