Ben Smith was born in C1870 in Dudley Staffordshire, he married his wife Dinah Shakespeare (born 5th May 1869 Antrim Staffordshire ) on 14th February 1892 at Pesnett, Staffordshire, they went on to have the following children, Elsie b1892 Dudley, Bertie b1895 Dudley, Harry born June 1903 Newthorpe and Granville born February 1908 Newthorpe and Julia born August 1912 Newthorpe. In the 1911 census the family are living at Main Street, Newthorpe and are shown as Ben Smith 41 yrs a coal miner, Dinah 41 yrs and their children , Elsie 19 yrs no occupation listed, Bertie 16 yrs a pony driver at colliery, Harry 9 yrs and Granville 3 yrs. Following his death his widow Dinah was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 6 pence a week which commenced on 6th March 1916 . His widow re married on 27th December 1916 to Alfred Ernest Abbott.

Military History

Private Ben Smith, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 15th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment. He died of “aortic disease” [1] at Roomer Camp, Masham, on 18th August 1915. He is buried in Masham (St. Mary) Churchyard. [1] Register of the disposal of his personal effects.
