Family History

Frederick Bloom Rate was born in 1891. In 1901, Frederick was an orphan living at Basford Workhouse. By 1911, he was boarding at 91 Main Street, Newthopre with 59 year old Henry Rate a coal miner corporal, and his wife Jane (58), who had adopted him, and their daughter Mary Elizabeth Rate (23). Henry Rate (1852) and Jane Ward (1853) were both born at Langtoft. Married in 1870, in the Spilsby registration district, they had eight children, seven surviving infancy - William b.1869 Langtoft, Sarah b.1871 Langtoft, Betsy b.1872 Langtoft, Alice b.1878 Greasley, Harry b.1881 Greasley, George b.1885 Greasley and Mary Elizabeth b.1887 Greasley.

Military History

Frederick Bloom Rate enlisted at Nottingham and landed in France on 17th February 1915. He died of wounds at Vimy Ridge. He is buried in Dernacourt Communal Cemetery, Grave Reference: I A 1
