Family History

Walter Kirk was born in 1896 at Newthorpe and was the youngest son of Edwin a coal miner hewer and Charlotte Ann Kirk née Rowland of Main Street Newthorpe Nottinghamshire. His father Edwin was born in 1857 at Newthorpe, his mother Charlotte Ann Rowland was born in 1859 at Lower Beauvale, they were married in 1877 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have the following children all of whom were born at Newthorpe, Beatrice b1878, Edwin b1879, Minnie b1881, Thomas b1884, Beatrice b1886, John b1888, Martha b1891 and Arthur Kirk b1894. In the 1911 census the family are living at Wappin, Newthorpe and are shown as Edwin 54 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Charlotte Ann 52 yrs and their children, John 23 yrs a coal miner hewer, Martha 20 yrs no occupation listed, Arthur 17 yrs an office clerk and Walter 15 yrs a coal miner hewer.

Military History

Gunner Walter Kirk enlisted at Nottingham on 2nd January 1915, he gave his age as 18 yrs and 356 days, his address was Wapping, Newthorpe, Nottinghamshire, his occupation was that of a coal miner, his next of kin was his father Edwin of the same address. He arrived at the Artillery depot at Newcastle upon Tyne on 6th January 1915 and was posted as a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery. He landed in France on 7th September 1915. He later embarked at Marseilles, France on 23rd November 1915 disembarking at Salonica on 11th December 1915. He was posted to the 22nd Divisional Ammunition Column on 6th August 1916. He became serious ill with dysentery on 9th September whilst at Malta and died on 23rd September 1916 of his illness. and is buried in Pieta Cemetery Malta.
