John Thomas Baxter was born in 1897 at Balderton and was the son of William a coal miner haulage attendent and Hannah Baxter née Johnson of South Street Giltbrook Nottinghamshire. His father William was born in 1872 at Bourne, Lincolnshire, his mother Hannah Johnson was born in 1863 at Balderton, they were married in 1894 their marriage was recorded in the Newark registration district, Hannah brought two children to the marriage, Mary Elizabeth Johnson b1883 and Herbert Johnson b1889 both born in Balderton, they went on to have the following children, Frances Lillian Baxter b1896, John Thomas Baxter b1897, Ivy Baxter b1899 and Annie Baxter b1906 all were born in Balderton. In the 1911 census the family are living at South Street, Giltbrook and are shown as William Baxter 39 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Hannah 48 yrs and their children, Frances Lillian 15 yrs a tailoress, John Thomas 14 yrs a pony driver coal miner, Ivy 12 yrs a scholar and Annie 4 yrs of age.
Private John Thomas Baxter enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Giltbrook. He served with the 2nd battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 1st July 1916 on the first day of the battle of the Somme. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme, France.
