Family History

Fred Hopkinson was born in 1876 at Skeller, Doncaster and was the eldest son of George a a farmer and Annie Elizabeth Hopkinson née Hall of Sand Lane, Besthorpe, Nottinghamshire. His father George was born in 1848 at Gorton, Nottinghamshire and his mother Annie Elizabeth Hall was born in 1850 at Wormersley, Yorkshire, they were married in 1873 their marriage was recorded in the Doncaster registration district, they went on to have the following children, George William b1874 Womersley , Fred b1876 Skeller, Frank b1879 Doncaster, Harry b1881 Spotborough, Jessie b1884 North Scarle, John b1887 Besthorpe, Robert b1891 Besthorpe, Tom b1893 Besthorpe and David b1895 Besthorpe. In the 1911 census Fred is living at Victoria barracks Portsmouth he is shown as being single 35 yrs of age and a Private in the 2nd battalion Lincolnshire Regiment.

Military History

Lance Corporal Fred Hopkinson enlisted at Doncaster on 11th July 1895, he served with the Lincolnshire Regiment. He was serving with the 2nd battalion Lincolnshire Regiment when he was killed in action on 26th August 1914, he is buried at Le Cateau Military Cemetery, Nord, France.
