John was the son of John and Caroline Hampson nee Squires. His father John was born in Cotgrave, Nottinghamshire, and his mother Caroline was born in Cropwell Bishop, Nottinghamshire, in 1864 (J/A/S Bingham). They were married in 1881 (A/M/J Nottingham) and had 13 children of whom only 11 survived infancy or childhood. Eleven children were named on the census between 1891 and 1911: William Henry b. 19 May 1881 (bap. 22 September), Annie Elizabeth birth registered 1883 (J/F/M Bingham), Zillah b. 7 October 1884 (O/N/D Bingham), Gershom b. 6 October 1886 (O/N/D Bingham), Adeliza b. 1888 (O/N/D Bingham), John birth registered 1891 (J/F/M Bingham), Margaret b. 19 November 1894 (O/N/D Bingham), Sarah Ellen birth registered 1893 (J/F/M Bingham), Joseph birth registered 1900 (J/F/M Bingham) possibly b. 27 November 1899, Lilian Grace b. 18 August 1902 (O/N/D Bingham) and Caroline (poss. Caroline May) b. 1904 (J/A/S Bingham) poss. b. 2 September 1904. The two children who died in infancy were probably Alfred (1896-1897) and Samuel (1898). In 1891 John (28), a general labourer, and Caroline (26) were living on Main Street, Cropwell Bishop, with their five children: William Henry (9), Annie (8), Zillah (6), Gershom (4) and John (2 months). The family was still living on Main Street in 1901. Six of their nine children were in the household on the night of the census: Gershom (14) a farm worker, Adeliza (12) a lace worker (at home), John (10), Sarah (8), Margaret (6) and Joseph (1). Annie and Zillah have not yet been traced on the 1901 Census, but the eldest child, William Henry (19), was living in Wirksworth, Derbyshire, with his maternal uncle, Gersham Squires, a grocer and baker, for whom he was working as an assistant, and his aunt Elizabeth and their family. The family home was still in Cropwell Bishop in 1911. John was still working at the gypsum mine as a miner. In the household on the night of the census were his wife Caroline and five of their children: John (20) who was also a gypsum miner, Margaret (16), Joseph (11), Lilian Grace (8) and Caroline (6). Also with the family was John and Caroline's grandson, John William (8, b. 1902 A/M/J Bingham). Four other children, William, Annie, Zillah and Gershom were all married and living independently. Adeliza and Sarah Ellen have not yet been traced on the 1911 Census. John married Mary Elizabeth Rick (b. 10 April 1893) in 1914 (J/A/S Bingham). Mary was widowed a few days after the Armistice; she never remarried. At the time of the England & Wales Register Mary Elizabeth was living at The Bungalow, Mill Hill, Bingham, probably with her elderly parents, James Rick (b. 5 May 1862), a retired bricklayer, and Charlotte (b. 8 March 1862) and her brother, Ernest (b. 10 February 1891) a gypsum miner banksman. She died on 9 June 1979 aged 86; her home was then at 17 Nottingham Road, Cropwell Bishop. John's mother, Caroline, died in 1929 (O/N/D Bingham) aged about 65 and his father in 1951 (J/F/M Bingham) aged about 88. Of John's siblings: William Henry married Florence Maud Mary Potter (b. 23 May 1880) in 1905 (J/A/S Barrow upon Soar). In 1911 they were living on The Green, Thurssington, Barrow upon Soar, with their two children Ralph Enos (4, b. West Bridgford) and Ida Grace (1, b. Thrussington). William was a baker. In 1939 at the time the England and Wales Register was compiled they were living in Leicestershire. William Henry was a master baker. Also in the household was his wife Florence, and children Edgar H (b. 12 July 1912) a baker and confectioner, William A (b. 30 March 1921) and Gladys J (b. 9 February 1926) who was at school. William's wife Florence died on 9 January 1953. He died on 2 March 1961. At the time of his death he was living at 37 Brookside, Rearsby, Leicestershire; his eldest son Ralph was one of his two executors. Annie Elizabeth married Arthur Dabell (b. 9 December 1872) in 1903 (O/N/D Bingham). In 1911 they were living on West Row, Cropwell Bishop. Arthur (36, b. Lenton) was a labourer. He and Annie (28) have three children: Arthur (7), Florence Elizabeth (3) and Gertrude Caroline (1); all the children were born in Cropwell Bishop. Annie died in 1934 (J/F/M Nottingham). Her widower, Arthur, a general labourer, was living at 20 Gladstone Terrace, Nottingham in 1939. Also in the household was Joseph Dabell (b. 21 January 1926), probably their son, who was an engineer's apprentice. Zillah married Frederick Marsden (b. 2 July 1881) in 1907 (J/A/S Newark). In 1911 they were living at 10 Mill Lane, Newark, Nottinghamshire. Frederick (29) was a railway plate layer. He and Zillah (26) had had four children of whom only three survived: Dorothy (6, b. Southwell), Elsie Mary (2, b. Newark) and Florence Jane (4 months, b. Newark). By 1939 Frederick , sub ganger railway (repair staff) and Zillah were living at 1 Deabill Street, Carlton, Nottingham. Three children were still living at home: Elsie Mary (b. 14 January 1909) a laundrey office clerk, Kathleen (b. 2 June 1918) a cotton winder, and Iris (b. 6 March 1926) who was still at school. Zillah died on 2 May 1966. Gershom married Mary Ann Warrington (b. 1 May 1884) in 1905 (A/M/J Nottingham). In 1911 they were living on Parker's Row, Cropwell Bishop. Gershom (24) was a gypsum miner. He and Mary Ann (25) had had four children of whom only three survivied: Dolly (5), Violet (3) and William Henry (1); all three children had been born in Cropwell Bishop. In 1939 Gershomand Mary Ann were living in Bingham, Nottinghamshire. Gershom was a general fitter at the gypsum works. Gershom was living at 83 Nottingham Road, Cropwell Bishop, when he died on 18 September 1960. His wife survived him. Adeliza married John Halifax in 1919 (J/A/S Nottingham). It seems likely that John had attested in 1915 at the age of 29 (b. Kneesall, Nottinghamshire). He was then working as a marine engineer and was mobilized in the Royal Engineers (WR048024), Inland Waterways and Dock Companies. His attestation papers show that he had previously served in the 1st Canadian Pioneers. He and Adeliza probably emigrated to Canada as their are records (unsighted) of their passage to Canad, Adeliza'a inclusion in the 1921 Census of Canada, and probable death of John registered in British Columbia. Sarah Ellen has not yet been traced after 1901 but according to the information on the 1911 Census completed by her parents would have still been alive at this time. Margaret married John P Devlin (11 March 1886) in 1919 ((J/F/M Nottingham). In 1939 Margaret, a vegetable cook, John and their son James (b. 16 July 1929) were living in Nottngham. Lilian Grace married William H Burton (b. 11 February 1900) in 1920 (J/F/M Bingham). In 1939 they were living on Main Streeet, Bingham. William was a gypsum worker while Lilian was a general farm worker. Also in the household was Margaret E (b. 18 August 1921) who was engaged in unpaid domestic duties. Lilian died in 1972 (O/N/D Nottingham). Caroline - probably Caroline May - appears to have married a Thomas Arthur [Arthur Thomas] Mackley in 1927 (J/A/S Bingham). In 1939 they were living at Squires Yard, Main Street, Bingham. Arthur was a gypsum miner. Also in the household was their daughter Edith Doreen/Doreen Edith (b. 23 September 1930). Arthur died in 1965 and Caroline married Harry Morris in 1966 (J/A/S Bingham). She died on 23 October 1983 at 3 Cropwell Butler Road, Cropwell Bishop.
