Family History

Samuel Vickers was born in 1894 at Brinsley and was the son of Thomas a coal miner hewer and his second wife Mary Elizabeth Vickers née Hemstock of New Brinsley. His father Thomas was born in 1859 at Stoneford, Derbyshire, he married his first wife Edith Wilson (born 1860 Greasley) they were married in 4th October 1880 and had the following children, William b1880, Lucy Emma b1884 and Hannah b1887 all were born at Brinsley his first wife Edith died in 1887. His father re married Mary Elizabeth Hemstock on 7th April 1890, they went on to have the following children, Eliza Ann b1891 and Samuel b1894 both were born in Brinsley. In the 1911 census the family are living in New Brinsley and are shown as Thomas Vickers 52 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his second wife Mary Elizabeth 42 yrs and their children, Eliza Ann 20 yrs no occupation listed and Samuel 17 yrs a coal miner hewer.

Military History

Private Samuel Vickers attested on 23rd February 1916 at Hucknall, Nottinghamshire, he was 22 yrs and 9 months old, he was a miner, single and lived at New Brinsley, his next of kin was his father Thomas of the same address, he was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised for war on 10th April 1918 now aged 24 yrs and 11 months. He was posted to the 3rd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 22nd April 1918 and went to France on 14th August 1918 and was posted to the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 18th August 1918. He was killed in action, 4th November 1918, aged 25, during the attack on German positions, near Poix-du-Nord, France and is buried at Cross Roads Cemetery, Fontaine-Au-Bois, France. Plot 3. Row B.
