Family History

George Cooke was born 1890 at Epperstone, he was the son of Thomas Summers Cooke a nurseryman and Sarah Cooke, née Whittaker of Main Street, Bramcote. Thomas Summers was born in 1839 at Arnold, Sarah Whittaker was born in 1848 at Stapleford, they were married on 25th December 1865 at St Helens Church, Stapleford, they went on to have 14 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family were living at Main Street, Bramcote, Thomas 78 yrs is a nurseryman, he is living with his wife Sarah 66 yrs and their children Ernest 26 yrs a traction engine driver, James 25 yrs a horseman and George 19 yrs a nurseryman.

Military History

Private George Cooke enlisted at Ilkeston whilst residing at Bramcote, he served with the 9th battalion Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) h was killed in action on 13th July 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

Killed in action, July 13th 1916, Private George Cooke, Scottish Rifles, aged 25 years, the dearly-beloved youngest son of Thomas and Sarah Cooke, of Bramcote, Notts.
