Charles Tebbutt was born in 1899 in Chilwell and was the son of William a cotton wool winder and Betsy Tebbutt née Norris of 21 Collington Street, Beeston, Nottingham. His father William was born in 1853 at Beeston and his mother Betsy Norris was born in 1862 in Harby, Leicestershire, .they were married in 1882 their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow Registration District, they went on to have 7 children , sadly one was to died in infancy. Their surviving children were William Thomas b1884 (died in military service 20/2/1915), Mabel b1885, Alfred b1888, John James b1892, Harry b1895 and Charles b1899 (killed in action 25/1/1918) Tebbutt. In the 1911 census the family are living at 101 Gladstone Street, Beeston and are shown as William 58 yrs a cotton wool winder, he is living with his wife Betsy 49 yrs and their children, William Thomas 27 yrs a brickyard labourer, John James 19 yrs a domestic gardener, Harry 16 yrs an errand lad and Charlie 12 yrs a scholar.
Private Charles Tebbutt enlisted at Beeston and served with the 1st battalion Lincolnshire Regiment he was killed in action on 25th January 1918 and is buried in Fins New British Cemetery, Sorel-Le-Grand, France grave reference III.G.23.
His elder brother Private Harry Tebbutt enlisted at Beeston, he gave his age as 20 yrs and 8 months, his address as 83 Gladstone Street, Beeston, his occupation as milling machinist and his next of kin as his father William Tebbutt of the same address. He was posted to the reserves and mobilised for war on 3rd April 1917, he was posted on the 5th April 1917 to 'Y' Company Royal Army Medical Corps. He embarked from Southampton on 23rd July 1918 landing the following day at Le Harve. On 1st September 1918 was posted to the 3rd Field Ambulance. He died of wounds received in action on 25th October 1918, he had served for 2 yrs and 321 days. He is buried in Harlebeke New British Cemetery, Belgium, grave reference IX.A.12 His elder brother William Thomas attested at Leigh Lancashire on 30th January 1915. He was evidently lodging with his sister Mabel Waters (née Tebbutt) who he cited as next of kin. He served with the South Lancashire Regiment. According to his ASR he was 'deceased at Warrington 20th February 1915. No cause of death cited.
