Family History

Thomas Frederick Sweeney was born in 1897 at Nottingham, he was the son of Thomas a telephone hand and Mary Emma Sweeney née Bishop of 40 Regent Street, Beeston, Nottingham. His father Thomas was born in 1869 at Roscommon, Ireland, his mother Mary Emma Bishop was born in 1874 at Nottingham, they were married in 1896 at Nottingham, they went on to have 6 children. In the 1911 census the family are living at 42 Nether Street, Beeston, Nottingham, Thomas 42 yrs is a telephone hand, he is living with his wife Mary Emma 37 yrs and their children, Thomas 14 yrs a telephone assistant, Annie 12 yrs a scholar, Bernard 10 yrs a scholar, Catherine 7 yrs, Winifred 4 yrs and Fred 1 year of age.

Military History

Private Thomas Frederick Sweeney, enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 18523 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, later he served with 2nd Battalion Cheshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 2nd October 1915. He is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Dud Corner, Panels 49 & 50.The battalion was holding a position near the Hohenzollern Redoubt and the line was subjected to bombardment all that day.
