Family History

Walter Lewis was born in 1896 the son of Edward a labourer and Emma Lewis (née Pepper). Edward was born in 1865 in Beeston, Emma Pepper in 1867 in Pinxton, Derbyshire. Married in 1887, they had seven children - Edward b.1888 and Thomas b.1890, Edith b.1892, John b.1894, Walter b.1896, Elsie b.1899 and George b.1902. In 1911, they lived at 4, Moor Gate Beeston. Thomas was an engineer, Edith a hosiery worker, John an electric plater and Walter a bottler. Walter married Edith Spray in 1915. They lived at 45, Nether Street, Beeston with their daughter Edith who was born in 1917.

Military History

Walter Lewis enlisted at Beeston and served with “B” Company. Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 10C 10D & 11A

In memoriam published 5th May 1981 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “LEWIS. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Pte. W. Lewis, killed in action May 5th, 1917.
