George William Letting was born in 1892 at Harlington, Bedfordshire the son of James a farm labourer and Elizabeth Letting (née Childs). Married in 1864, they had ten children, nine surviving infancy - Bertha b.1890, George William b.1892, Violet Lilley b.1894, Wilfred James b.1896, Hilda May b.1897, Thomas Lawrence b.1900, Gladys b.1903, Cyril Robert b.1905, Stanley Leonard b.1907 and Bernard b.1910. In 1911, they lived at Adelaide Cottage, Goswell End, Harlington. By 1911, George was living at 65, High Road, Beeston, Nottingham with his aunt and uncle Mary and John Bailey.
George William Letting enlisted at Nottingham whilst living at Beeston initially serving (34679) in the Sherwood Foresters .He was killed in action at Grandcourt and is buried at Serre Road Cemetery No 2
His brother Thomas Lawrence Letting served in the 5th battalion Grenadier Guards, he died on 15th February 1919 of influenza aged 19 and is buried in Biscot Holy Trinity churchyard. Both are commemorated on the Harlington Village war memorial and a roll of honour board in St Mary the Virgin Church, Church Road, Harlington, Bedfordshire.
