Family History

Samuel Withers was born in 1875 at Balderton and was the son of George an agricultural labourer and Jane Withers née Parnham of Balderton, Newark. His father George was born in 1835 in Balderton and died in 1902 aged 67 yrs his mother Jane Parnham was born in 1849 at Upton, she died in 1891 aged 43 yrs, they were married in 1872 their marriage was recorded in the Newark Registration District, they went on to have the following children, Ann b1873, Samuel b1875, John b1883 Charles b1886 all were born n Newark In the 1911 census Samuel is living at Church Lane Balderton, he is shown as being 35 yrs of age, a maltsters labourer single and living alone at the address.

Military History

Private Samuel Withers enlisted on 3rd November 1915 at Newark, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and was killed in action on 3rd September 1916, during the Battle for Guillemont he is buried at Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont Hamel, Somme, France.

Article published 15th August 1917 in the Newark Advertiser :- Son of George & Mary Withers of Balderton. A native of Balderton, where he was well known and prior to enlistment worked for Messrs. Long and Co., maltsters, Whitfield Street. Enlisted on November 3rd, 1915 and went to France the following March. Posted missing on Sept. 3rd, 1916 and presumed dead in August 1917. His brother, Stoker, J.W. Withers of 8 Ward’s Row, Lovers’ Lane, is now on active service somewhere in the North Sea.
