Francis Hazzledine

Francis (Frank) was the only son of Francis (Frank) and Ann Hazzledine (nee Blackwell). Francis was born in Beeston, Nottingham, and Ann in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. They were married in 1895 (marriage registered O/N/D Basford) and had two children, Annie Elizabeth (Annie Eliza) b. 1896 (A/M/J Basford) and Francis b. 1897 (O/N/D Basford). Francis senior completed the 1911 Census with the information that he and Ann had had three children but it seems likely that Francis included Gerty M Blackwell (Hazzledine) who was described on the 1911 Census as an adopted daughter. In 1901 Frank (26), a railway labourer, and Ann (25) were living at 7 Salisbury Street, Beeston, with their two children, Annie Eliza (5) and Frank (3). By 1911 the family was living at 101 Humber Road, Beeston. Annie (15) was working for a surgical appliance company and Frank (13) was an errand boy at a lace factory. Also in the household was the adopted daughter, Gerty M. (6), and Ann's widowed mother, Ann Blackwell (72, b. Tewkesbury). Gerty has not yet been traced after 1911. The CWGC record gives Frank and Ann's address as Leopold Cottages, 59 Humber Road, Beeston. Frank died on 13 August 1937, the Probate record gave his address as 101 Humber Road, Beeston. His widow died twenty years later on 1 June 1957, her address was given on the Probate record as 106 Prestwold Road, Leicester. Frank's sister, Annie Elizabeth, married Thomas W Cockerill in 1919 (A/M/J Basford). Thomas died aged 60 in 1952 (March Basford) and Annie over thirty years later in 1983 (December Nottingham) aged 87. Frank's uncle (his father's brother), George Hazzledine (265922 Private 1/7th Bn Sherwood Foresters), was killed in France on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme (Thiepval Memorial). He left a wife and young child. He is also commemorated on the Beeston St John memorial.
