Family History

Walter was born in 1898 at Leeds and was the son of Jack a moulder and Annie Mawson nee Wood of 7 Hawton Lane, Balderton. His father Jack was born in 1858 at Leeds and his mother Annie Wood was born in 1863 at Berkshire, they were married in 1883 at St Saviours, London and went on to have the following children, Emily b1886 London, Harry b1888 London Frederick b1890 London, Albert b1894 Leeds, Walter b1888 Leeds and Sidney Mawson b1900 Balderton. . In the 1911 census the family are living at 7 Hawton Lane Balderton, they are shown as Jack 53 years a moulder, he is living with his wife Annie 48 yrs and their children, Harry 23 yrs a moulder, Albert 17 yrs a fitter, Walter 13 yrs a scholar and Sidney 11 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private Walter Mawson enlisted at Newark, he lied about his age as he was only 16 years old. He initially served with the service number 2905 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was invalided home with pleurisy and when he recovered he returned to France. Serving with the 42nd battalion Machine Gun Corps, he was killed in action by a shell splinter to the head. He is buried at Bertincourt Chateau British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.

Extra Information

His brother Private Albert Mawson enlisted at Newark and served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. he landed in France on 2nd March 1915. He was killed in action on 22nd June 1917 and is buried at Loos British Cemetery Grave Reference: XIX A 17 Article published on 19th October 1918 in the Newark Herald :- Son of Mr & Mrs Mawson, 7 Hawton Lane, New Balderton. Prior to enlisting worked at Simpsons. Joined up early in the war when only 16 years of age. He was in France for ten months when invalided home suffering from pleurisy. Had been out again for thirteen months when killed. At 6:30 a.m. the enemy were shelling at the time and he was hit in the head by a shell-splinter.
