He was the son of John and Elizabeth Cox of Beeston Nottingham. He married Norah M Mitchell in Beeston on 27th December 1915. They lived at 21 Evelyn Street Beeston.
John enlisted in Beeston on 11th December 1915 giving his aunt Sarah Cook as next of kin. He was a Wesleyan. On 12 December 1915 he was placed into the reserves. He was mobilised on 6th March 1916 and posted to the Sherwood Foresters on 7th March 1916. He embarked at Folkstone on 10th July 1916 arriving in Boulogne. He received a gunshot wound to the abdomen 26/9/1917 and died at 61st CCS. Dozingham Military Cemetery Grave Reference: VI H 4
Obituary from the Nottingham Evening Post dated 27th September 1919: - “COX. – In loving memory of Pte. J. A. Cox, the dearly-loved husband of Norah Cox, who died at the 61st Casualty Clearing Station Sept. 27th, 1917.
