Alfred Ernest Clifford was born in 1883 the son of William a lace maker and Sarah (née Gore) of 29 Enfield Street, Beeston, Nottingham. His father was born in 1849 in Beeston and his mother in 1851 at Manchester. Married in 1874, they had seven children, six surviving infancy - William b.1877, Mary Louisa b.1878, Henry b.1880, Arthur b.1882, Alfred b.1883, Sarah b.1887 and John Robert b.1888 all of whom were born in Nottingham . In 1906, Alfred Ernest married Jemima Caroline Wood. They had three children - Alfred, William and Louisa. In 1911, they lived at 9, Broughton Street, Beeston.
Alfred Ernest Clifford was called up on 30th September 1916 at Nottingham. He was posted to the Army Service Corps on 4th October 1916 and started his training. On 28th September 1917 he embarked for German East Africa on the Troopship HT Honorata at Devonport. By 4th November 1917 he was transhipped at Durban Port (South Africa) onto the troopship HT Caronia and finally disembarked at Kilwa German East Africa on 13th November 1917 and was posted to the 648th Motor Transport Company of the Army Service Corps. Throughout his service in Africa he suffered 5 bouts of Malaria causing him to be admitted to hospital on each occasion. He was finally admitted to 84th General Hospital in Dar Es Salaam on 11th November 1918 with influenza from which he died at 11.10pm on 14th November 1918. He is buried in Dar es Salaam (Upganda Road) Cemetery.648th MT Coy
Obituary published in the 'Nottingham Evening Post', dated 27th November 1918:- “CLIFFORD. - Died in hospital, East Africa, November 14th, of influenza, Pte. A. Clifford, A.S.C. M.T., fourth son of William and Sarah Clifford, 29 Enfield-street, Beeston. His brother Private John Robert Clifford was killed in action on 26th August 1918.
