Henry Garrod was baptised in St Stephens church, Walworth in London on 11th January 1886 and was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Garrod. Henry married his wife Florence Briggs (born 21st May 1886 at Balderton) in 1906 at Newark, they lived at Penfold Lane, Balderton and they had the following children, Ivy Elizabeth born 7th September 1907, William Henry born 25th January 1910 and Doris Mabel born 7th November 1911. In 1911 they lived at 9 Coronation Street New Balderton and were shown as Henry 25 yrs a blacksmiths engineer, he is living with his wife Florence 24 yrs and their children, Ivy Elizabeth3 yrs and William Henry 1 year of age. His widow was awarded a pension of 29 shillings and 7 pence a week from 6th May 1918 for herself and her 3 children.
Private Henry Garrod enlisted at Newark and served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters , he was killed in action on 30th September 1917 and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial Panel 99 to 102 & 162 to 162A
Article published on 14th November 1917 in the Newark Advertiser :- Resided with wife Florence and three young children in Pinfold Lane, Balderton. Prior to enlistent, three months after war broke out, he was engaged in blacksmith’s shop at Messrs. Simpsons. Invalided home in March 1917 with a bad knee and went out again in June. Killed instantaneously by a shell as the company was coming out of the line. Place of birth Balderton UKSWD but confirmed London by 1911 Census and Free BMD.
