Family History

Horace Poxon was born in 1895 the son of the late William a coal miner hewer and Rachel Poxon née Daykin of 6 Main Street, Awsworth. William was born in 1869 at Awsworth he died in 1902 aged 33 yrs, Rachel Daykin was born in 1869 at Cotmanhay, married in 1890 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had children, John William b1892, Horace b1895 and Ivy b1897 all were born in Awsworth. In 1911 the family are living at Main Street, Awsworth.

Military History

Gunner Horace Poxon enlisted at Ilkeston he served with "C" Bty. 83rd Bde Royal Filed Artillery. He landed in France on 9th September 1915 and died of wounds in Rouen and was buried in the St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen (grave ref. R.II.Q.22).

Family headstone, Awsworth St Peter's churchyard: In loving memory of William Poxon who died August 14th 1902 aged 35(?) years. 'Be ye also ready for in such an hour ye think not the son of man cometh.' Also of Ivy, daughter of the above, who died March 4th 1907 aged 10 years. 'Safe in the hands of Jesus.' Also of Horace, son of the above who died of wounds at Rouen, France, Septr. 20th 1918, age 23 years. 'His end was peace.'
