Samuel Austin Horsfield was born in 1895 in Awsworth and was the son of Samuel an engine fitter and Hannah Elizabeth Horsfield née Hames of 16 Doris Road, Ilkeston. His father Samuel was born in 1866 in Shirland, Derbyshire and his mother Hannah Elizabeth Hames was born in 1867 in Giltbrook, they were married in 1888 their marriage was recorded in the Basford, Registration District. They went on to have 12 children, sadly five were to die in infancy or early childhood their surviving children were Sarah Elizabeth b1893 Awsworth, Samuel Austin b1895 Awsworth, Clarice May Victoria b1898 Heanor, Hannah b1900 Morley, Hilda b1902 Morley, William Bertrand b1903 Morley, and Robert Leslie b1908 Morley. In the 1911 census the family are living at 16 Doris Road, Ilkeston and are shown as Samuel 45 yrs married, an engine fitter, he is living with his children Sarah Elizabeth 18yrs a servant, Samuel Austin 16 yrs a colliery engine driver, Clarice May Victoria 13 yrs a 'jacker off' in the lace trade, Hannah 11 yrs a scholar, Hilda 9 yrs a scholar, William 8 yrs a scholar, Robert Leslie 3 yrs. Their mother Hannah is not shown at the family home on the night of the census , however we find her listed as a patient at the Nottingham General Hospital, Postern Street, she is shown as being 44 yrs and married. His mother Hannah Elizabeth was to die in 1914 in Nottingham she was 47 yrs of age.

Military History

Pte. Samuel Austin Horsfield, enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Ilkeston, he served with the 6th Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers. He landed in the Balkans on 9th July 1915 and was killed in action on 9th August 1915 at Gallipoli . He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial.
