Leonard Graves was born in 1892 the son of Mark a bread baker at the Co Operative store and Mary Graves née Newton and the brother of Ethel Amelia, Selina, William Arthur, Mark Victor, Jacob and Eva Graves. In 1911 they lived at 49 Mill Street Ilkeston. Mark was born in 1866 at Horncastle, Lincolnshire, Mary Newton was born in 1867 at Pye Hill, married in 1888 their marriage was registered in the Chesterfield registration district, they had 11 children, sadly 4 died in infancy or early childhood. Leonard married Kate Wilson (born 19th June 1896) in 1914 their marriage was recorded in the Doncaster registration district, they lived at Knowle Cottage, Nottingham Road, Kimberley and had two children, Winifred born 20th June 1914 and Leonard born 6th January 1917. Commencing 17th June 1918 his widow Kate was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week.
Private Clarence Graves enlisted at Hucknall whlst residing at Kimberley, he was killed in action on 12th October 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
