Evan Williams was born in 1866 in Gravesend and was the son of Naomi Williams Evan married Sarah Jane Walters (born 20th December 1878 ) on 9th December 1902 at Mansfield. They lived at 7 Plough Yard, Warsop and had the following children, Joseph Thomas, born 1904, Elizabeth Ann, born 1908, Gertrude Alice, born 1909, Harold Evan, born 1910, John Wilfred born 1912, Dora, born 1914 and James Arthur 1915. They also had 2 children who died as babies George Cyril 1905 and Winifred Mary 1906. In the 1911 census the family are living at 7 Plough Yard, Warsop and are shown as Evan Williams 45 yrs a brick layers labourer, he is living with his wife Sarah Jane 34 yrs and their children, Joseph Thomas 7 yrs, Elizabeth Ann 3 yrs, Gertrude Alice 1 year and Harold Evan 4 months old. Following his death his widow Sarah Jane was awarded a pension of 28 shillings and 6 pence a week which commenced on 7th December 1916.

Military History

Rifleman Evan Williams enlisted on 13th January 1915 at Mansfield , he gave his age as 37 yrs and 212 days, (he was born in 1866 and was in fact 49 yrs old) his address as 7 Plough Yard, Warsop, he stated he was a labourer and was married , his next of kin was his wife Sarah Jane of the same address. He joined the King's Royal Corps at their barracks at Winchester on 14th January 1915. Posted to the 4th battalion he landed in France on 18th May 1915. He was wounded on 9th July 1915, he was treated and returned to his battalion on 9th August 1915 at Rouen. He was admitted to the 8th General Hospital with bronchitis on 21st August 1916 and returned to England on 23rd August 1916. He was discharged from the army on 11th September 1916 Medically discharged as unfit for war service, bronchitis. He died on 6th December 1916 and is buried at St Peters Churchyard, Warsop.
