William George Grooby was born in 1888 at Bainton, Northampton. He married his wife Fanny Elizabeth Vincent (born 7th November 1893) in 1914, their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they lived 13 Ridgeway Terrace, Warsop and had a son Robert William born 1st March 1915, he died on 17th November 1915. His widow Fanny was awarded a pension of 15 shillings which commenced on 16th August 1915, this was however reduced to 10 shillings following the death of their son. His widow remarried on 10th June 1916 to John Dawson a coal miner.
Private William George Grooby enlisted at Northampton, he served with the 1 st battalion Northamptonshire Regiment. He landed in France on 13th August 1914, he was killed in cation on 29th January 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Le Touret memorial, France.
Mansfield Reporter, 13 August 1915 :- 'Warsop. Memoriam Service. A memoriam service for the six Warsop lads who have fallen in action was held at the Church Army Mission on Sunday night. Captain Elliott conducted the service, which was attended by a large sad reverent congregation. The names of the gallant heroes were mentioned as follows: Lance-Corpl J Hollingsworth, Pte W Foley, Pte W Dennett, Pte C Webster, Pte F Riley and Pte G Grooby.' http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk
