Family History

Clifford Davey was born in 1894 at Hoyland, Yorkshire and was the son of George a grocer and Henrietta Davey née Brearley of 28 Victoria Street, Warsop. His father George was born in 1861 at Bagthorpe, his mother Henrietta Brearley was born in 1875 at Hoyland, Yorkshire, they were married in 1893 their marriage was recorded in the Barnsley registration district, they went on to have the folowing children, Clifford b1894 Hoyland, Harold b1896 Rotherham, Rowland b1898 Rotherham and Edmund b1903 Warsop. In the 1911 census the family are living at 28 Victoria Street, Warsop and are shown as George 50 yrs a grocer he is living with his wife Henrietta 36 yrs and their children Clifford 17 yrs a colliery clerk, Harold 15 yrs a lamp cleaner at colliery, Rowland 13 yrs at home and Edmund 8 years of age. He married his wife Florence Harvey married on 15th October 1917 at the parish church at Warsop, they lived at 28 Victoria Street, Warsop. Following his death his widow Florence was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 25th November 1918.

Military History

Private Clifford Davey enlisted on 31st May 1915 at Mansfield, giving his address as 28 Victoria Street, Worksop, he gave his age as 21 years and 252 days he stated his occupation was that of a clerk and his next of kin was his wife Florence of the same address. He was posted to the 7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 6th March 1916. He died of gun shot wounds to his upper arm and is buried at Mons (Bergen) Communal Cemetery, Belgium. Plot 6. Row C. Grave 12.
