Family History

William Copeland was born on 18th September 1877 at Stafford and was the son of Arthur a coal miner hewer and and Ann Copeland née Simcox of 7 West Street, Eckington, Sheffield. His father Arthur was born in 1851 at Market Bosworth, Leicester, his mother Ann Simcox was born in 1847 at West Bromwich, they were married on 29th August 1869 at Dudley and went on to have the following children, John b1875, William b1877, Arthur b1882 and Amelia b1887. In the 1911 census his parents were living at 7 West Street, Eckington, Sheffield and were shown as Arthur 62 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Ann 66 years of age. William married his wife Edith Gasgoigne (born 16th March 1880) on 28th June 1897 at Eckington, Sheffield they lived at 16 Edward Street, Warsop and went on to have the following children, Ada b1898, John William b1899, Wilfred b1902 all born at Eckington and Dora b1906 Chesterfield Following William's death his widow Edith was awarded a pension of 21 shillings and 6 pence a week which commenced on 3rd July 1916.

Military History

Corporal William Copeland enlisted at Warsop, he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 14th July 1915. He died of wounds on 14th December 1915 and is buried at Sanctuary Wood Cemetery, Belgium. Special Memorial.
