Charles Wharmby was born in 1889 he was the son of Christopher a coal miner and his first wife the late Eliza Wharmby née Hayes of 51 Low Road, Clown. Christopher was born in 1859 at Whittington, Eliza Hayes was born in 1864 at Staveley she died in 1895 aged 31 yrs, they were married on 6th December 1880 at Chesterfield, they had 5 children. Charles married Violet Hannah Lilliman (born 26th January 1891 ) they married on 16th July 1910 at St Edmunds Church, Mansfield Woodhouse they had a daughter Lillian Francis born 11th November 1911 and lived at 143 Blake Street and 20 Coke Street, both at Mansfield Woodhouse. In 1911 Charles 22 yrs and a coal miner is living with his wife Violet 20 yrs and is lodging at 170 Sherwood Street, Mansfield Woodhouse he is lodging with Harold Salisbury 28 yrs a coal miner hewer. Commencing 2nd December 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week.
Lance Corporal Charles Wharmby enlisted on 14th November 1914 aged 25 years and 333days he was a coal miner. He had served for nearly 2 years with the Sherwood Foresters previously but had been discharged. He went to France on 11th December 1914. He was severely wounded and was returned to England for treatment. He returned to France on 4th December 1917 and was killed in action on 28th March 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Pozierers Memorial.
5 of Violet's brothers also served and 3 (Joseph, Robert and William) of them were killed.
