Family History

John William Walker Known as Jack was born in 1892 at Langwith he was the son of William and Alice Walker. John married Charlotte Storer, (born 20th November 1891) they were married in 1914 at Mansfield, they had 2 sons John William, born 17th October 1914 and George Walter, born 28th June 1916 (born after his father's death.) The family lived at 125 Coke Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. Commencing 16th October 1916 his widow was awrded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence a week. Charlotte married Arthur Keeton in 1918.

Military History

Private John William Walker enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and landed in France on 16th December 1915 Reported as missing on 14/02/1916, during heavy German shellfire and the explosion of a German mine, prior to the German attack of the front line trenches, near the canal to the south-east of Ypres, Belgium. He was not confirmed as killed on that date until November 1916. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium.

Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser, 24/11/1916: Pte John W Walker of 127 Blake Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, who had been missing from 14/02/1916 is now reported to have been killed. He leaves a wife and 2 children, one only 5 months old, born since he went away. Brother of above named soldier is Driver Harold B Walker of RFA who is serving in the Balkans.
