Family History

John Samuel Tittley was born in 1891 he was the son of Samuel a coal miner hewer and Clara Tittley née Hill of 55 Carlton Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. Samuel was born in 1865 at Westbury, Shropshire, Clara Hill was born in 1871 at Shortheath, Staffordshire, they were married on 14th September 1890 at St Luke's Church, Stafford, they went on to have 5 children. In 1911 the family lived at 18 Hospital Terrace, Mansfield Woodhouse, Samuel 46 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Clara 40 yrs and their 5 children including John Samuel 20 yrs a coal miner loader. John Samuel married Fanny Foster (born 11th August 1890) on 5th August 1911 at St Edmunds Church, Mansfield Woodhouse they had no children. His widow re married in on 2nd June 1917 to become Mrs Wallace and lived in York.

Military History

Private John Samuel Tittley enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 1/7th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers and landed in France on 28th July 1915. He had initially been reported missing, it was not until March 1917 that it was confirmed he had been killed on 14th November 1916. He is buried at Warlencourt British Cemetery, Pas De Calais.

Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser: 27/05/1915, photograph: 25/01/1917, Photograph printed, has been wounded twice previously now reported missing: 22/03/1917, The late Pte J Titley of 55 Carlton Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, previously reported missing but family now have been informed of his death. His body had been found but with no ID, so identified by letters found in his pockets. surname is Tittley on CWGC site.
