Frederick Smith was born 1898 he was the son the late James a bricklayer and Harriett Smith née Bicknell. James was born in 1865 at Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, he died in 1908 aged 44 yrs Harriett Bicknell was born in 1870 at Ilkeston, they were married on 11th April 1887 at Holy Trinity Church Bordsley, Warwickshire. they went on to have 11 children. His mother Harriett went on to re marry in 1909 at Basford to Thomas Nixon (born 1887) the family lived at 135 Sherwood Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. (Fred's step-father, Thomas Nixon had also enlisted but was discharged as being no-longer fit after serving for almost 2 years) In 1911 the family are living at 175 Sherwood Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, Thomas Nixon is 24 yrs and is a coal miner, he is living with his wife Harriett Nixon and her 5 children and a further child Jane Nixon 6 months old
Private Frederick Smith enlisted in September 1914 at Mansfield whilst residing at Mansfield Woodhouse, he served with the 2/5th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 26th September 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
His brother James William Smith was killed on 09/05/1915 whilst serving with the Sherwood Foresters, and Stoker Charles T Smith serving on HMS Hannibal. He had been in the Navy for 7 years. (Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser 22/11/1917)
