Family History

Frederick Carey Shawcroft was born in 1888 he was the son of Joseph a coal miner hewer and his first wife and Isabella Shawcroft née Collins of 230 Warsop Vale, Shirebrook. Joseph was born in 1862 at Somercotes, Isabella Collins was born 1862 at Hucknall, she died in 1892 agd 30 yrs they were married in 1880 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district they went on to have 6 children. His father remarried in 1895 in Mansfield to Elizabeth Berkin born 1862 at Belper, they went on to have 3 further children. In 1911 his parents are living at 230 Warsop Vale, Shirebrook, Joseph is 51 yrs and is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his second wife Elizabeth 48 yrs and their daughter Christobel 11 yrs. Frederick married Jane Ellen Smith (born 27th May 1889) they were married on 1st August 1910 at St Edmund's Church Mansfield Woodhouse, they had 3 children Maise Iris b1910, Ivy born 1912 and Ann b1917 who died 1917. In 1911 Frederick and his family are living at 119 Coke Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, Frederick is 23 yrs and is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Jane Ellen 21 yrs and their daughter Maise Iris 6 months of age. Commencing 8th March 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week. Jane married William Howell in 1920 they lived at 62 Station Street Mansfield Woodhouse.

Military History

Private Frederick Carey Shawcroft enlisted and served with the 6th battalion York and Lancaster Regiment, On active service from 13th September 1915 in Egypt. He served in Gallipoli where he was wounded in the left arm and returned to England. He died on 7th March 1917 of Acute Lymphatic leukemia and is buried at Mansfield Woodhouse Cemetery.

Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser: 15/03/1917. Pte Frederick Shawcroft, son of Joseph Shawcroft , of the York & Lancaster Regiment has died of wounds to his left arm, received in the Dardanelles. Discharged from his unit, his injury became more serious. He leaves a widow and two children.
