Family History

Samuel Harris was born in 1887 at Edgehill Warwickshire the son of John Harris an agricultural labourer and Harris of Kingsbury, Warwickshire. Samuel married Florence Latham (born 26th February 1877 Kingsbury) in 1909 their marriage was registered in the Ashby De La Zouch registration district, Florence brought a child to the marriage Mabel Latham born 7th November 1980. They went on to have further children, Charles born 21st June 1910, Dorothy 5th April 1912 and Joseph born 8th November 1913, they lived at 2 Poplar Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. In 1911 the family is living at May Cottages, Baddesley Ensor, Warwickshire, Sam is 24 yrs and is a coal miner, he is living with his wife Florence 34 yrs and their children Mabel Latham (step daughter) 2 yrs and Charles Harris 9 months of age. Commencing 2nd October 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings a week.

Military History

Private Sam Harris enlisted in September 1914 at Mansfield, he served with the 1st battalion Leicestershire Regiment. Landing in France on 23rd February 1915 . He was killed in action on 16th March 1916 and is buried at White House, Cemetery, St Jean Les Ypres.
