Family History

William Herbert Greaves was born in 1886 at Newstead he was the son of Ernest Albert a council labourer and Elsie Greaves née Shaw of 119 Blake St, Mansfield. Ernest Albert was born in 1858 at Edwinstowe, Elsie Shaw was born in 1862 at Hucknall they were married C1881 and went on to have 11 children, 2 of whom died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 his parents and siblings were living at 119 Blake Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, Ernest Albert is 50 yrs and a council labourer, he is living with his wife Elsie 50 yrs and their children, however William Herbert has not been located on the 1911 census. On his pension record card it gives his sole legatee as his unmarried wife Miss Annie Carter of 12 Butt Close Lane, Leicester

Military History

Private William Herbert Greaves enlisted at Staveley, he served with the 1st battalion Grenadier Guards. He landed in France on 20th September 1914 and was killed in action on 24th March 1916 and is buried at Ypres Reservoir Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.
