Family History

Willis Clarke was born in 1895 at Kirkby in Ashfield, he was the son of Joseph a coal miner hewer and Edith Clarke née Wightman of 11 Sherwood Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. Joseph was born in 1870 at Kirkby in Ashfield, Edith Wightman was born in 1874 also at Kirkby in Ashfield, they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Leicester registration district. They went on to have 10 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at Rupert Street, Lower Pilsley Joseph 41 yrs is a coal miner hewer he is living with his wife Edith 37 yrs 8 of their children, including Willis 14 yrs a coal miner pony driver.

Military History

Private Willis Clarke enlisted at Mansfield and went to France on 27th August 1915 he was killed in action, 25th September 1915, whilst serving in the trenches near La Chapelle-D’Armentieres, France. Buried : X Farm Cemetery, La Chapelle-D’Armentieres, France. Row D. Grave 9.
