Family History

Thomas Clarke was born in 1897 he was the son of Alfred William a boot repairer and his first wife Emma Clarke née Maycock of Mansfield. Alfred William was born in 1870 at Kristiansand, Norway, Emma Maycock was born in 1865 at Coventry, they were married in 1896 at Mansfield and went on to have 4 children, Thomas b1897, Arthur b1900, Minnie b1904 and Alfred b1904 all were born in Mansfield. His mother Emma died in 1904 she was 38 yrs, his father re married in 1908 at Mansfield to Susan Keyworth, she brought a child Sarah Keyworth (born 1906) to the marriage. In 1911 the family are living at 5 Vallance Yard, Mansfield, Alfred 41 yrs is 41 yrs and is a boot riveter he is living with his second wife Susan 31 yrs and his 4 children and his step daughter Sarah Keyworth. Thomas is 14 yrs and is a door trapper in a colliery.

Military History

Private Thomas Clarke, enlisted at Newark he served with the 1/8th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, attached 139th Trench Mortar Battery. He landed in France on 28th June 1915 and was killed in action on 8th June 1917. He is buried in Loos British Cemetery, Grave Reference: XIX C 3
