Family History

George Clarke was born in 1892 he was the son of Frederick a coal miner hewer and Catherine Adelaide Clarke née Limb of 23 Vale Road, Mansfield Woodhouse. Frederick was born in 1870 at Hucknall, Catherine Adelaide Limb was born in 1871 at Mansfiedl Woodhouse, they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they went on to have 8 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family are living at 23 Common Lane, Mansfield Woodhouse, Frederick is 41 yrs and is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Catherine Adelaide 40 yrs and their six children, including George 19 yrs a pit top coal picker

Military History

Private George Clarke enlisted at Mansfield, he initially served with the service number 34950 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He died of influenza on 29th September 1918 whilst serving in Mesopotamia. He is buried at Theran War Cemetery Iran.
