James Clarey was born in 1896 he was the son of John a coal miner hewer and Martha Cleary née Evans of 35 George Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. John was born in 1875 at New Invention, Staffordshire, Martha Evans was born in 1876 at Cradley Heath, Staffordshire, they were married on 19th April 1897 at Holy Trinity Church, Short Heath, Stafffordshire, they went on to have 8 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family were living at 35 George Street, Mansfiedl Woodhouse, John is 36 yrs and a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Martha 35 yrs and 7 of their children, including James 15 yrs a coal miner hewer
Lance Corporal James Clarey enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 20th Hussars Part of the Household Calvary. He landed in France on 5th October 1915 and was killed in action on 27th November 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial. Louverval, France.
