William Henry Burden was born in 1878 at Newstead, he was the son of the late George a coal miner hewer and Elizabeth Burden née Shooter of 48 Station Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. George was born in 1854 at Calow, Derbyshire he died in 1913 aged 59 yrs Elizabeth Shooter born in 1853 at Codnor, Derbyshire she died in 1913 she was aged 60 yrs, they were married in 1876 their marriage was recorded in the Chesterfield registration district, they went on to have 8 children, sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 William is living with his married mother Elizabeth at 48 Station Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, his mother Elizabeth is 53 yrs she is shown as being married, William is 32 yrs and is a coal miner hewer, they are also living with his sister Phoebe Smith Burden 12 yrs . William Henry married Ada Bostock (born 1st April 1887) they married on 22nd November 1913 at St Edmunds Church, Mansfield Woodhouse. they lived at 48 Station Street, Mansfield Woodohouse, they had a daughter Dorothy born 25th July 1914. Commencing 27th May 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week

Military History

Private William Henry Burden enlisted at Mansfield. He went to France on 27th August 1915 and was killed in action, 11th November 1917, whilst serving in the line near Poelcappelle, Belgium. Commemorated : Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium. Panel 99 to 102 and 162 to 162A.
