Charles Ball was born in 1878 he was the son of the late Elijah a cattle drover and Mary Ball née Spencer of Mansfield. Elijah was born in 1826 in Nottinghamshire, he died in 1894 he was 64 yrs old, Mary Spencer was born in 1837 at Mansfield she died in 1912 she was 75 yrs old, they were married on 27th February 1859 at St Mary's Church Sutton in Ashfield, they had 8 children. Charles married Mary Hibbert (born 25th September 1880) on 18th December 1897 at St John's Church Mansfield, they lived at 28 George Street, Mansfield and had the following children, George Edward born 1901, Charles born 22nd February 1902, Ivy born 2nd July 1906 Emily born 4th April 1909 and Janet born 11th August 1914. In 1911 the family were living at 13 Bancroft Lane Mansfield, Charles 33 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Mary 30 yrs and their 5 children. Commencing 25th December 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings a week.
Private Charles Ball, enlisted at Mansfield and served with the 11th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, he went to France on 27th August 1915 and died of wounds on 20th June 1916. He is buried in Millencourt Communal Cemetery Extension.
Death notice published 7th July 1916 in the Mansfield Reporter and Sutton Times :- Private Charles Ball, of George Street, Mansfield. He was killed in France on June 20th, and leaves a wife and five children.
