Family History

Joseph William Clarke was born in 1896 at Bolsover, Derbyshire. He was the son of Harry a coal miner hewer and Emily Clarke née Waterfield, of 17, Corporation Street, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Harry was born in 1870 at Swadlincote, Emily Waterfield was born in 1871 at Church Greasley, they were married on 21st September 1892 at St Emanuel, Swadlincote, they went on to have 8 children. In 1911 the family are living at 41 Oxcroft Lane, Bolsover Harry 41 yrs is a coal miner hewer he is living with his wife Emily 40 yrs and their 8 children including Joseph William 15 yrs a pony driver coal miner.

Military History

Private Joseph William Clarke enlisted at Mansfield, he served at Gallipoli during 1915 and was killed in action on 11th September 1916 by German shellfire whilst serving in the trenches to the south of Thiepval, France, during the Battle of the Somme. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memoprial, Somme, France.
