James William Clarke was born in 1892 at Derby he was the son of James Henson Clarke a boiler smith and Emma Clarke née Cash of 40 Mansfield Road, Pleasley. James Henson was born in 1856 at Derby Emma Cash was born in 1859 at Nottingham she died in 1914 at Mansfield aged 56 yrs, they were married in 1882 at St John's Church, Derby they went on to have 5 children. In 1911 the family are living at 40 Mansfield Road, Pleasley, James Henson is 55 yrs and a boiler smith he is living with his wife Emma 52 yrs four of their children including James William (shown as William) 18 yrs a coal miner

Military History

Private James William Clarke enlisted at Mansfield in November 1917 , he died of wounds on 1st November 1918 and is buried at Mansfield (Pleasley HILL ) cEMETERY.

Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser: 14/11/1918: Pte J W Clarke aged 26, the son of Mr James Clarke, 40 Chesterfield Road, Pleasley. Has died of wounds received on 21/10/1918. Had enlisted November 1917. Military funeral held at Pleasley Hil Cemetery.
