Family History

William Charles Hazelwood was baptised on 19th August 1888 at Cheveley, Suffolk, he was the son of Henry Hazelwood a maltsters labourer and Betsy Hazelwood, née Sargeant of 78 Henry Street, Burton on Trent. His father Henry was born in 1867 at Cheveley, Suffolk his mother Betsy Sargent was born in 1866 at Ashley Cambridgeshire, they were married in 1885 at Ashley, Cambridgeshire, they went on to have 13 children, sadly 6 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 cenus his mother and 3 siblings are living at 78 Henry Street, Burton upon Trent, she is shown as Betsy 47 yrs a married charwoman, she is living with her children, Lilly 15 yrs no occupation, Charles 12 yrs and Albert 6 years of age. In the same 1911 census Wiliam Charles has left the family home, he is a boarder and is 23 yrs of age and is a coal miner fitter, he is living at Newdigate Street, West Hallam he is living with Charles Henry Bowler 36 yrs a coal miner and his family William Charles married Selina Page (born 29th May 1891) they were married on 5th June 1911 at St John’s Church, Smalley, they lived Mill House, Horsley Woodhouse, and had a daughter Phyllis Agnes born 7th April 1915 at Horsley Woodhouse. His widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week which commenced on 12th June 1916. She married Fred Whiten in 1922. They lived at 15 Quarry Lane Mansfield.

Military History

Private William Charles Hazlewood enlisted at Derby he served with the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was probably one of the 10% left as reserve on Mudros prior to the battle of 9 August. The battalion occupied the front line from 11th to 24th November and William was wounded during this tour of duty he died on : 23rd November 1915, age 27.and is buried at Hill 10 Cemetery, Turkey. Extra Information

His brother Sapper Henry Hazelwood served with the service number 175602 with 174th Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers he died on 24th August 1918 and is buried at Burles New Cemetery, France.(he is not listed on the Nottinghamshire Roll of Honour,) additional research Peter Gillings
