Family History

Reginald Smith was born in 1899 he was the son of Ernest Edward a drapery traveller and Margaret Smith née Bannister of 4 Howard Street, Mansfield. Ernest was born in 1869 at Alfreton, Margaret Ann Bannister was born in 1867 at Sudbury, Draycott, they were married on 21st November 1892 at Ironville, they went on to have 4 children, Ernest Moreton b1893, Douglas Bannister b1896, Reginald b1899 and Margaret Lillian b1903 all were born at Ripley. In 1911 the family were living at 6 Ivy Grove, Ripley, Ernest is 42 yrs and is a traveling draper, Margaret Ann is 44 yrs they are living with their 4 children,

Military History

Private Reginald Smith enlisted on 6th September 1916 aged 17 years and 351 days giving his occupation as a grocers assistant, his next of kin was his father Ernest Edward. He was posted to the reserves the following day and mobilised for war on 21st February 1917. He landed in France on 19th August 1918 and was reported missing in action on 27th May 1918 (he had been taken as a prisoner of war) He died of influenza and bronchial pneumonia in a prisoner of War camp in Germany on 27th October 1918 and is buried at Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany.

His service records note: "died in the presence of his comrades and German male nurse, being fortified with the consolation of his religion" Died at 8pm.
