Laurence Henry Rutter was born in 1890 he was the son of Henry William an insurance agent and Elizabeth Rutter née Evans of 104 Westfield Lane, Mansfield. Henry William was born in 1868 at Willenhall, Elizabeth Evans was born in 1868 at Mansfield, they were married in 1888 at Wolverhampton, they went on to have 5 children, sadly 2 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family were living at 12 Alma Terrace, Chesterfield Road, Mansfield, Henry William is 43 yrs and insurance agent he is living with his wife Elizabeth 43 yrs and their children, Laurence 21 yrs a shop assistant, Frances Hilda 16 yrs a shop assistant and Florence Elizabeth 13 yrs old.
Private Laurence Henry Rutter had been in the army from 10th October 1910 when he enlisted at Mansfield and served with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment until 11th August 1912. He was was recalled to the colours on 27th July 1914 at Swadlincote, He landed in France on 25th February 1915. Had suffered shell shock in July 1915 and was returned to England on 3rd August 1915 and returned to the front on 22nd March 1916. He was killed in action on 1st July 1916 on the first day of the Battle of the Somme and is buried at Foncquevillers Military Cemetery, Pas De Calais, France
