Albert Ellis was born in 1884 at Guisborough, Yorkshire and was the son of Richard a coal miner and Sarah Ellis of 1 Fairholme Drive Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Albert Ellis married his wife Alice Maud Bowskill, on 12th November 1904 at St Johns Church Mansfield they had the following children Samuel Albert, born 21/05/1905, Elsie Vera, born 20/05/1916, Violet Frances, born 27/04/1909, Kathleen, born 12/10/1911, Thomas, born 24/06/1914 and Beatrice Maud, born 10/06/1917. They lived at 15 Broomhill Lane, Mansfield. In the 1911 census the family are living at 26 Fairholme Drive, Mansfield and are shown as Albert 26 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Maud 27 yrs and their children, Albert 5 yrs, Elsie 4 yrs and Violet 1 year old, also liivng with them is his brother Ernest 19 yrs a coal miner Alice was awarded a pension of 33 shillings and 9d.

Military History

Private Albert Ellis enlisted on 3rd December 1914 at Mansfield he gave his age as 30 yrs and 62 days, he was living at 75 Somersall Street, Mansfield, his occupation was that of a coal miner. He was posted to the 4th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He was posted to the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 17th August 1915 and went to France 18th August 1915. He was admitted to No.1 Canadian Hospital, Etaples, France, 14th January 1917, suffering from haemorrhoids and was transferred to England on Hospital Ship Warilda, 18th January 1917. He returned to France 23rd March 1917 and was posted to the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 28th May 1917 and the 11th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. 16th June 1917. He was killed in action, 16th September 1917, aged 32, during the attack at Zillebeke, Belgium. He is buried at Hooge Crater Cemetery, Belgium. Plot 15. Row F. Grave 1.
