William George Robinson was born in 1884 in Mansfield and was the son of Herbert a joiner and Eliza Robinson née Swift of 14 Heywood Street, Mansfield. His father Herbert was born in 1855 in Mansfield and his mother Eliza Swift was born in 1855 in Farnsfield, they were married in 1878 in Mansfield and went on to have 5 children 1 sadly died in infancy their surviving children were Eliza H b1881 Mansfield, William George b1884 Mansfield, Lizzie b1886 Mansfield and John Herbert b1891 Mansfield. William George Robinson marries his wife Emma Gullet in 1907, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they go on to have a son John William b1910 in Mansfield, they live at 91 Newgate Lane Mansfield, in the 1911 census the family are living at this address and William George is 27 yrs and a coal miner. In the same 1911 census his parents are living at 14 Heywood Street, Mansfield and are shown as Herbert 56 yrs a joiner he is living with his wife Eliza 56 yrs and their children, Lizzie 23 yrs and John Herbert 20 yrs a coal filler Following his death his widow receives a pension of 15 shillings a week for herself and her son John William.

Military History

Private 2491 William Robinson, enlisted on 9th September 1914 at Mansfield he gave his age as 30 yrs and 305 days and his address as 4 Heywood Street, Mansfield. He served with the 1/8th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment and landed in France on 2nd March 1915. He was killed in action on 18th April 1916 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.Enlisted 09/09/1914. Reported as missing on 18/04/1916 on the 5th June 1916 he was struck off strength as being killed in action on 18/04/1916.
