Military history

John was based with 110 Sqdn at Kai Tak Airfield in Hong Kong. He was the navigator on a Dakota IV on a transport flight to Singapore when the plane crashed 2 mins after takeoff. It is thought that air turbulance caused the crash. The full crew, John K Hazeldine, Alastair Christie, Richard Bond and Rex Neville Blackmore died in the crash as well as 14 passengers.
One of the passengers was the lead investigator looking into Japanese war crimes against prisoners of war, Colonel Cyril Wild.
