Herbert Pearce was born in 1892 at Doncaster he was the son of George a coal miner and Elizabeth Pearce née Kemp of The Green, Newton, Alfreton. George was born in 1861 at Sutton in Ashfield, Elizabeth Kemp was born in 1866 at Clay Cross, they were married on 7th September 1894 at Tibshelf, they had 9 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family are living at The Green, Newton, Alfreton, Derbyshire, George 50 yrs is a coal miner he is living with his wife Elizabeth 44 yrs and four of their children, Horace 25 yrs a coal miner, Ernest 23 a coal miner, Elsie 15 yrs and Frederick 12 yrs of age. In 1911 Herbert has left the family home, he is boarding at Mapplewell, Barnsley he is 19 yrs of age and an elementary school teacher, he is boarding with Elizabeth Steeples 62 yrs a boarding house keeper.
Lance Sergeant Herbert Pearce attested on 8th January 1915 at Llandudno giving his age as 23 yrs he was an elementary school teacher. Mobilised on 13th March 1915 he was posted to the 16th battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Landing in France on 3rd December 1915 and promoted to Lance Corporal on 22nd November 1916. He was wounded in action a gun shot wound to his neck and admitted to the 29th casualty clearing station, he died of his wounds on 24th April 1916 and is buried at Bagneux British Cemetery, Gezaincourt, France.
His brother Fred Stanley Pearce an able seaman with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve died of disease on 1st August 1918 he is buried at Blackwell Churchyard
