He was the son of William and Doris Grosse, of Balderton, Nottinghamshire
Wilfred Grosse was mortally wounded on ‘D’ Day. The assault just west of Omaha Beach by the US 2nd Rangers saw some of the bloodiest fighting of the entire Normandy invasion. Thousands of American troops struggled to climb a 100 foot cliff under intense German fire. Wilfred Grosse was part of the 522nd Assault Flotilla tasked with carrying US troops to Omaha Beach as well as supplies to nearby Pointe du Hoc. His landing craft was hit by an enemy shell, which killed most of the 35 men on board, as they approached the shore. Severely wounded, Wilfred Grosse was repatriated but died in the UK.
